  Artist's Statement

My work is mainly about the plight of animals in a human world. I find it important to highlight how animals are simultaneously loved, neglected and abused by humans who have power of life and death over them. I create visual “stories” that compel the viewer to look beyond the obvious and delve into the reality of a subject’s situation. The goal is to reveal the innate character of the individual and to show the viewer that there is always more than what is apparent at first glance.

There is personality as well as an undeniable sentience in our fellow animals and I endeavor to make this characteristic quality come through in my artwork whether I am creating prints, paintings or drawings. During my creative journey with a particular subject or theme, I always keep in mind that the energy and the matchless quality of the individual(s) must shine through. My aim is to depict the unique being instead of the stereotyped version of what has commonly been promoted. And my ambition is to show how vulnerable non-human animals are in our world and how they are routinely taken for granted and much, much worse.

Though I have been working mostly with etching and monotypes recently, I employ different mediums and techniques to create my visual “stories” depending on which medium I feel best suits the subject or by what particular technique engages me at the time.
